Ait Ben Haddou is a fortified town, or palace (ksar), along the old caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. Most citizens living in the area now live in more modern housing in a nearby town, although there are still 4 families living in the old city. This giant fortification, which is made up of six forts (Kasbahs) and almost fifty palaces that are individual houses, is a great example of clay-clay architecture, which is also used in Moroccan architecture, and all of the country's ancient cities. , including the Four Imperial Cities.
